United Airlines launches 'paperless flightdeck'

Airline to deploy 11,000 iPads to replace paper charts and manuals.

Following on from the news that British Airways is rolling out iPads to cabin crew, United Airlines has announced its plans to use iPads to enable paperless flightdecks.

The iPads will feature a navigational charting app and reference material and will replace the '38 pounds' of paper currently included in flight crews bags.  The weight saving alone is estimated to be worth a saving of over 300,000 gallons of jet fuel per year.
