New WhatsApp limit aims to tackle spread of false information

WhatsApp is limiting the number of times members can forward any single message.

WhatsApp users will be blocked from forwarding messages to more than five individuals or groups.  This limit has already been in place in India. The company now plans to roll out the limits globally.

The limit was introduced in India in 2018 following a spate of mob killings which were blamed on fake stories spread via WhatsApp.

A spokesperson for the company, quoted by the BBC, stated:

"The forward limit [trial in India] significantly reduced forwarded messages around the world…. [This] will help keep WhatsApp focused on private messaging with close contacts."
