BioMed Central announces Open Access Advocate of the Year

Dr Helena Asamoah-Hassan honored as BioMed Central's Open Access Advocate of the Year

London  ()

Open access publisher BioMed Central presented the Open Access Advocate of the Year award at their recent 6th Annual Research Awards ceremony held at Emirates Stadium, UK on Thursday 17th May. Dr Helena Asamoah-Hassan, University Librarian of the Kwame University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana and a Fellow of the Ghana Library Association was only the second individual winner of this prestigious award.

This award recognizes institutions or individuals who have done the most to show leadership in taking steps to expand access to the published results of scholarly research.

Helena has been instrumental in creating the Open Access mandate at KNUST, ensuring they became BioMed Central's first Southern Foundation Member, and she has been tireless in her support for our Open Access Africa event, including acting as host for the OAA conference in 2011.

Helena said "I wish to thank BioMed Central for this honor, that day was one of the best days of my life that I will cherish, I appreciate all the effort BioMed Central put into organizing the ceremony and also finding me worthy to receive such a prestigious award because the desire for open access to scholarly information globally is very dear to my heart."
