Self-publishing in Germany

In Germany half of Amazon's top 100 e-books list are self-published.


Amazon launched the Kindle Direct Publishing programme in Germany in 2011.  Now half of its top 100 e-books in Germany are self-published.

Writing in Publishing Perspectives, Matthias Matting describes how Amazon’s strategy has helped grow self-publishing in Germany.  He surveyed self-published authors and discovered:

  • 40% of them use Amazon’s KDP Select – which requires exclusivity
  • A third of the top 100 e-books in Germany are only available from Amazon
  • 4% earn over €2,000 per month
  • Eight German authors earned over €100,000 a year
