Wiesbaden, Germany  ()

February 8, 2012, Wiesbaden, GermanyHARRASSOWITZ, international booksellers and subscription agents, and RIPM, the Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals/ Répertoire international de la presse musicale, are pleased to announce that both the RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals and the RIPM Online Archive of Music Periodicals are now available to be ordered from HARRASSOWITZ. Both are accessible via the RIPMPlus platform.

Founded in 1980, the Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals is a highly annotated international database that was established to provide detailed content analyses of 18th, 19th and 20th century writings on musical history and culture.  It is the first effort to undertake retrospective music periodical indexing on an international scale.

The Retrospective Index currently indexes the contents of 184 music periodicals from 1766 -1962, including articles, reviews, illustrations, music examples, advertisements, and press reviews.  It provides unique access to primary source material and is an essential complement to RILM, the Music Index, and the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

The RIPM Online Archive – which was selected as an "Outstanding Academic Titles” in 2010 by Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, published by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) – is a full-text collection of journals indexed in the RIPM Retrospective Index.  The Archive consists of 105 rare music journals that are unique, not available in any library, and are culled together from a number of incomplete copies in different collections to form complete journal runs.

Both the RIPM Index and the RIPM Archive are updated twice a year with new titles, and both are accessed on the new, vastly improved RIPMPlus platform.  In order to facilitate searching, viewing of full-text, and manipulating the databases, and to increase the number of pertinent citations retrieved, the new platform offers the following unique features:

  • a translation module that translates entries in the RIPM Retrospective Index from RIPM’s 14 languages to any of 52 user-selected languages
  • easy selection of periodicals from a single drop-down window
  • drop-down virtual keyboards for searching in non-Roman characters (e.g. Russian)
  • auto-suggest option in the search field
  • searches in two or more user-selected languages
  • cross-language “search-expanders” that retrieve all forms of names and terms, e.g. Tchaikovsky=???????????=Czajkowski
  • a single search option bar to

- view number of records

- display short or long citations

- select: all, marked or records only in the Archive

- sort by earliest, latest or by periodicals

  • toggle button for easy shifting between full-text pages and search results
  • display of next and previous citations in journal display without returning to search results
  • citation counter in page display for easily toggling to numbered citations in search results

H. Robert Cohen, Founder and Director of RIPM, says the RIPM organization is proud to provide a reference source and unique collection of music journals that has been described as being “invaluable to students and scholars around the world.”

And Monika Krieg, HARRASSOWITZ Head of Publisher Relations and Sales Europe, adds “we are delighted to be able to present such an important and innovative product to our customers.  An essential tool to scholars, librarians and archivists, it will immeasurably enhance every library’s collection.”

A demonstration of the RIPM database will be given at the HARRASSOWITZ booth no. 225 at this year’s Music Library Association (MLA) Annual Meeting, February 15-19, 2012, in Dallas Texas.  For further reference, please visit the user guides on the RIPM webpage.
