HARRASSOWITZ Announces 2016 Charleston Conference Scholarship Winner

Wiesbaden, Germany  ()

HARRASSOWITZ, international booksellers and subscription agents, is pleased to award the 2016 Charleston Conference Scholarship toMs. Caroline Jirka, Collections Assessment Librarian at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Ms. Jirka was awarded the $1,000 scholarship to attend the conference, which takes place November 2-5 in Charleston, South Carolina.

In support of the 2016 conference theme of "Roll with the Times, or the Times Will Roll Over You", applicants for this year's scholarship were asked to submit a short essay on the topic "What does ‘Roll with the Times, or the Times Will Roll Over You' mean to libraries and vendors?"

In her winning essay, Ms. Jirka acknowledges that

There have been tremendous changes in both libraries and the publishing world in the past ten years. In order for libraries to remain relevant, they have to look for new ways to meet patron demand at the point of need. Students and researchers increasingly favor more flexible and mobile electronic resources over physical ones...

"The challenge for vendors", she notes, "is to provide the right resources in ways that patrons want to use them, and are viable for libraries to provide."

Judging the submissions were: Clint Chamberlain, Educational Resource Support Officer, Dallas County Community College District; Lynda Fuller Clendenning, Head of the Acquisitions Division at Indiana University in Bloomington; and Tina Feick, HARRASSOWITZ's Director of Sales and Marketing for North America.

"Again this year, the objective was to provide a travel scholarship to someone who has never been to the Charleston Conference", Tina Feick said. "The judges appreciated Ms. Jirka's look to the future and her balanced view of vendors. We look forward to meeting her at the Charleston Conference and know she will find it to be a rewarding experience."

The complete essay can be viewed here.
