Ukraine: Government help for book industry

Government initiative to address the decline in publishing and bookselling.

Ukraine is experiencing a decline in publishing.  The number of books published per capita is much lower than the EU average.

Ukraine’s government has now announced an investment programme worth approximately €46 million to address the national decline in bookselling and publishing.  The move follows a similar announcement from the Russian government in May.

The proposed initiatives include:

  • Promoting books and reading on the TV and in other mass media
  • Providing funds to modernise printing companies
  • State funded publishing projects
  • Exploring the introduction of duties on imported books
