UK: Launch of .UK domain name

New shorter domain names launched.

In a move that brings the UK into line with most other countries, shorter two-letter suffixes have been made available.

Nominet, the non-profit company that manages the UK’s web addresses, says that existing holders of .co.uk domains will be offered first refusal on the equivalent .uk address – and have up to five year to reach a decision.

Among the first to take up a .uk domain were Stephen Fry and Martha Lane Fox.
