UK: Funding for 'hyperlocal' media projects

Nesta has allocated £2.4m to technology-led projects that will improve local life.

Nesta and the Technology Strategy Board have announced four winners of its competition to find projects to help people connect to their local communities.   The competition is the latest stage of Nesta’s ‘Destination Local’ initiative.

The winners were chosen from 39 projects and were chosen for their ability to demonstrate the value of technology led projects in local communities.

Winners include:

  • A collaborative project in York which brings together researchers, data scientists and media producers who are using open data platforms to transform local media content - primarily for mobile delivery.
  • A geotagging project in north and east London which will help people access local media stories.
  • A social media community channel for older people in the south west.
