Particle physics and an 'OA milestone'

The entire field of particle physics will soon switch to OA.

According to a story in Nature, the entire field of particle physics will soon switch to OA.

The Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics (SCOAP) is reported to be very close to an agreement that will ensure that nearly all particle physics articles will be made immediately available OA.  The Consortium has negotiated deals with 12 journals so that individual research groups do not have to strike piecemeal deals.

Journals were invited to bid for three-year OA contracts and the Consortium ranked the publishers.  Journals will receive an average of €1,200 per paper.  The Consortium will pay out of its annual budget of €10 million, which will be generated by pledges from over 1000 libraries, funding agencies and research consortia.  This means that existing journal subscription fees are being 'repurposed' to provide open-access funds.
