OA in European biomedical sciences

New briefing assesses open access in biomedical research across Europe.

The European Medical Research Council has published ‘Open Access in Biomedical Research', highlighting the need for the quicker adoption of OA to biomedical research articles across Europe.  The briefing's three key findings are:

The moral imperative for open access
Research papers should be made freely available to all to read, use and re-use to maximise the value of biomedical research and improve human health.

Individual agencies must work together to raise awareness of the moral imperative for open access
Agencies and organisations that fund and perform research, libraries, publishers and researchers must work collectively to raise awareness of the moral imperative for open access publishing.

Stakeholders should work together to support the development of a Europe-wide PubMed Central
A Europe-wide repository in biomedicine will act as a partner site to the US PubMed Central.
