Europe: WhatsApp raises minimum age

WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, has increased its minimum user age from 13 to 16.

The move comes just a month before new data privacy regulations (GDPR) roll out across the EU.

Users will be asked to confirm their age when they accept new terms of service and the platform’s updated privacy policy.  The new terms of service also allow users to download their personal data including their contacts.

In regions outside of Europe, the minimum age to use WhatsApp will remain at 13.
