Elsevier and Norway agree €9m big deal

Agreement reached with Norwegian consortium.

Elsevier has announced it has reached a deal with a consortium of seven Norwegian universities and 39 research institutions.  The big deal covers the cost of publishing an estimated 2000 OA articles per year as well as giving access to Elsevier journals.

Earlier this year, the University of California cancelled its agreement with Elsevier after it failed to reach a similar read and publish deal with the publisher. Other consortiums from Germany, Hungary and Sweden have also failed to reach an agreement with Elsevier and have simply walked away.

The difference here seems to be that others who have walked away from Elsevier were looking to reduce costs significantly. The Norwegian consortium appears to have agreed to a figure that is higher than its current subscription rate.
