Content moderation: Facebook to cooperate with France

French officials will spend six months reviewing content moderation processes.

A team of civil servants will be embedded with Facebook to explore the company’s processes for reviewing hate speech. They will explore both algorithm-led moderation and human moderation processes.

The investigation marks an opportunity for the government and Facebook to work together to craft regulations and standards, rather than wait for regulators set the rules without the company's input.

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, called the trial project “smart regulation” and said he hopes this type of collaboration can be extended to other tech giants.
