China: National Library archiving project

Initiative includes preserving over 200 billion Weibo posts.

The National Library of China is leading on an initiative to preserve parts of the country’s digital heritage. The project aims to chronicle and archive how the internet has evolved in the country.  Over 200 billion public posts on Weibo will be preserved as part of the project.

The first additional partner chosen for the project is the news portal Sina.

Sina has over 460 million active users on Weibo and it has a massive trove of data which records significant events and the public’s response to them. Other Chinese internet companies are being invited to participate in the initiative.

Data collected from Weibo and Sina.com will be stored on company servers while the national library and Sina will jointly analyse the data for policymaking and academic purposes.
