British Library acquires the St Cuthbert Gospel

Successful fundraising campaign enables BL to acquire the earliest intact European book.

The £9 million Gospel was acquired following the British Library's largest ever fundraising campaign.

The Gospel was produced in north east England in the late 7th century and placed in St Cuthbert's coffin on the island of Lindisfarne.  The Gospel is in excellent condition and is now on public display at the British Library in London.

The Gospel has also been digitised
