Banned Books in the UK

Collaboration to raise awareness of censorship.

Banned Books Week was launched in the US in the early 1980s.  It raises public awareness of free speech and censorship.

Now a collaboration between The British Library, The American Library Association, the Free Word Centre and Islington Libraries is bringing Banned Books Week to the UK.

A list of notable banned books has been produced by Islington Libraries and includes such titles The Handmaid's Tale, The Da Vinci Code and The Kite Runner.

Books on the list will be promoted at book clubs and reading groups and are being featured on the Reading Groups for Everyone website.
