Australia opens Facebook investigation

Investigation into whether Facebook has breached the 1988 Privacy Act.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has announced a formal investigation into Facebook after it was confirmed that the information of more than 300,000 Australians may have been acquired and used without authorisation.

The Information Commissioner said the Office would work with foreign authorities during the investigation and went on to say:

"This is a timely reminder to all organisations of the value of good privacy practice to Australians.  Organisations should regularly and proactively assess their information-handling practices to ensure that they are both compliant with privacy laws and in keeping with community expectations."
