Germany: new online copyright law

Impact of new law on publishers and search engines unclear.

The new law, which comes into effect in August, gives publishers exclusive rights to the online commercial use of their publications.

The law does not include news snippets, which means that search engines will not be charged for republishing single words or short extracts in their search results.

There is some speculation as to how the bill will be interpreted by publishers and search engines.
