A Danish citizen has been convicted by a Malaysian court for spreading false news.
He had posted a YouTube video claiming police took 50 minutes to respond to a shooting incident. The police claimed they had arrived in eight minutes.
The defendant Salah Salem Saleh Sulaiman admitted to the charge, claiming he had posted the video in “a moment of anger”.
Sulaiman was fined 10,000 ringgit but he opted to spend a month in jail.
Malaysia’s Anti-Fake News law covers digital publications and social media. It can also be applied to offenders outside Malaysia, including foreigners, if Malaysia or a Malaysian citizen are affected.
