HARRASSOWITZ Charleston Conference Scholarship Winner

HARRASSOWITZ Announces 2014 Charleston Conference Scholarship Winner

Wiesbaden, Germany  ()

HARRASSOWITZ, international booksellers and subscription agents, is pleased to award the 2014 Charleston Conference Scholarship to Charlotte Roh, Scholarly Communication Resident Librarian at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Ms. Roh was awarded the $1,000 scholarship to attend the conference, which takes place November 5 - 8 in Charleston, South Carolina.

In support of the 2014 conference theme of "The Importance of Being Earnest",applicants for this year's scholarship were asked to submit a short essay on the topic "What does ‘The Importance of Being Earnest' mean to libraries and vendors?"

In her winning essay, Ms. Roh observes that

as textbook costs soar at three times the rate of inflation, students struggle financially and in the classroom, doing without the materials they need to learn. In short: Students are not buying books because they are too expensive.

"One solution to this barrier to student learning," she notes, "is the use of library resources":

Where do all these fabulous high-quality library resources come from? The answer, of course, is that the resources are provided through vendors such as Harrassowitz, who provide curated access to material that would not be available otherwise. Therefore a healthy working relationship is absolutely necessary between library and vendor in order to achieve student learning and faculty research.

Judging the submissions were: Clint Chamberlain, Educational Resource Support Officer, Dallas County Community College District; Lynda Fuller Clendenning, Head of the Acquisitions Division at Indiana University in Bloomington; and Tina Feick, HARRASSOWITZ's Director of Sales and Marketing for North America.

"Again this year, the objective was to provide a travel scholarship to someone who has never been to the Charleston Conference", Tina Feick said. "The judges were impressed with Ms. Roh's well-researched essay, and congratulate her on her achievement. We know she will find the Charleston Conference to be a rewarding experience."

The complete essay can be viewed here.

Charlotte Roh will also be on the panel "Libraries Leading the Way on the Textbook Problem". For more details, as well as for information on registration and this year's program, please visit the conference website.
