Vatican and OU libraries to digitise ancient texts

The libraries are planning to digitise 1.5 million pages of ancient texts.

The Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (BAV) and The Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford are planning to make the digitised ancient texts freely available online.

The digital collections will focus on:

  • Greek manuscripts,
  • 15th-century printed books
  • Hebrew manuscripts and early printed books.

Scholars will benefit as dispersed collections are brought together digitally.

The initiative has been made possible by a 2 million pound ($3.17 million) award from the Polonsky Foundation.
