Wales: a new national library card

Contract awarded to develop a national library card system.

The Welsh government wants to develop a library card system that can be used in any library across the country, rather than limiting users to their own local authority libraries.  It has awarded a contract to the library management system vendor SirsiDynix.

The project also aims to create a national e-book and e-magazine service offering free and seamless downloads.

The system is expected to be launched in 2016.

As previously reported here, ministers in Scotland are currently trialling projects that will issue a library card for every new-born.
