UK newspaper tweets to be regulated

The UK's Press Complaints Commission regulations look set to extend to newspaper and reporter Twitter feeds later this year.

Twitter is in the headlines in the UK again, following the naming of celebrities alleged to have obtained 'super injunctions' to keep stories out of the press.  Although Twitter is already subject to UK libel laws, there is at present apparently no redress available via the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) if an inaccurate statement is broadcast via Twitter.

According to a story in Paid Content, the PCC is planning to correct this anomaly by ensuring that newspaper and reporter Twitter feeds are included in their regulations.  The plan is to differentiate between reporters' personal Twitter feeds and those that are clearly related to their professional affiliations.

The PCC is also encouraging newspapers to develop Twitter policies.
