Turkey: Twitter 'blocked'

Turkey joins China - now both countries block the network.

As Turkey prepares for local elections, due to take place on 30 March, some of Turkey’s ten million Twitter users are reporting that the social media site has been blocked.

Turkey’s Prime Minister has recently made a speech in which he promised to ‘wipe out Twitter’ in his country.  His speech came after Twitter was used to broadcast material which purported to show evidence of political corruption at the centre of Turkey’s government.

Twitter has responded by explaining how users may be able to bypass the block by posting via SMS.
