Social login trends: Google closing the gap

The latest social login trends show Google catching up with Facebook.

Social login enables users to register on websites using an existing social network identity.  It’s a facility that means users don’t have to complete registration forms and new login details on different websites.

Research from Janrain explores the use of social login by online consumers during Q2 of 2013 and looks at the underlying trends.

Key findings:

  • Facebook is the most popular choice for social login with 46% of the market share
  • Google is closing the gap in second place with 35% and is especially popular on consumer brand and retail sites
  • Twitter has 6% market share

Meanwhile, according to Searchmetrics social sharing via Google+ is likely to exceed that of Facebook by 2016.
