JPO and EPO cooperate on machine translation

Agreement reached between Japan and European Patent Offices to improve access to patent information.

The agreement covers provision of improved automatic translation of patents from Japanese into English, then German and French via Espacenet, the public patent information service available on the EPO website.

The number of patent filings is continuing to grow, despite the worldwide economic downturn.  The provision of translations means that patents will be readily available to innovative companies and research institutes.
