Italy: teens receive culture bonus

All 18 year olds will receive money to spend on cultural experiences.

Italy’s Prime Minister has announced a scheme that will see the country’s 18-year olds receive €500 to spend on cultural experiences.

Over half a million teenagers will benefit from the scheme.  They will be able to download vouchers via an app that they can use to buy books or attend theatres, museums and national parks.

Last year, Italy’s Prime Minister announced an increase in spending on both defence and culture, stating that extremism should be fought with more than extra police and border guards.   The grants are designed to emphasise the importance of cultural consumption and to affirm European cultural values.
