Internet connectivity – global figures

40% of the world's population will be connected to the internet by the end of 2013.

The United Nation’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has published its latest tech statistics and global rankings report.  It shows the continued growth in internet access but also highlights the fact that 4.4 billion people are still not connected.

The ITU publishes an annual ICT Development Index which ranks 157 countries according to their level of ICT access, use and skills.  This year, the top ten countries are:

  • Korea
  • Sweden
  • Finland
  • Netherlands
  • UK
  • Australia
  • Switzerland
  • USA
  • Germany
  • Canada

Countries which are the most dynamic (those moving up the ranking table) include UAE, Lebanon and Belarus.
