EU looking to increase regulation for messaging apps

Changes to rules will introduce parity with traditional telecoms companies.

According to a story in the Financial Times, the EU is looking to overhaul its telecom rules so that it can exert greater control over messaging apps and social media companies.

The EU has strict privacy regulations that control the telecoms industries. A review of telecom rules, scheduled for later this year, is expected to require messaging firms to comply with these existing stricter regulations.

The commission is due to make an initial announcement in September and present detailed plans for legislative review later this year.
