Blockchain and peer review

Pilot project to test how blockchain can support the peer review project.

Digital Science, Katalysis, ORCID and Springer Nature will contribute to a pilot project to test blockchain technologies in the peer review process.

The first stage of the project will look at how the distributed registry and smart contract elements of blockchain can be used.

Further down the line the project will look to create a consortium of organisations committed to solving the challenges of peer review processes.

Joris van Rossum of Digital Science, who will lead the project said:

Peer review is a crucial part of scholarly communication and the unique characteristics of blockchain technology hold great promise to solve so many of the challenges we see today. With ORCID, and founding partner Springer Nature, this initiative is already an opportunity to make a significant change. I encourage other organisations to contact me if they wish to participate.
