Axel Springer to pay fees for news snippets

Publishing giant promises to make ancillary copyright payments.

Axel Springer, the German publishing giant, has announced a strategic partnership with Samsung that will result in Springer paying licensing fees for the aggregation of news articles by the new app Upday.

As a publisher of news content, Axel Springer has championed the payment of ancillary copyright fees.  It is now demonstrating its willingness to pay fees as an aggregator of other publishers’ news content.

Last year saw Google temporarily removing Axel Springer’s news content from Google search results in Germany.
