Access to Research in UK public libraries

Pilot project success means initiative will continue.

Originally launched in 2014, the Access to Research initiative set out to ensure that public library users would be granted free access to millions of academic articles.

A consortium of academic publishers granted public libraries a license to provide free access to their scholarly content via Summon.  A two year pilot project has seen 84,000 users carry out more than 230,000 searches.  A staggering 90% of users rated the information they found as useful.
