Spain: pirated content

Study claims high proportion of population download illegally.

Spanish industry lobby group La Coalición has released its study on Digital Content Consumption in Spain in 2013.

Key findings:

  • 51% of Spain’s internet users downloaded pirated content in 2013
  • The rate of illegal content use is increasing
  • Films are the most frequently pirated form of content, followed by music, books and video games in that order

The study estimates that the Spanish economy is losing out on over €500 million and 26,000 jobs.  The findings echo those made by Nielsen in 2012, which estimated that 45% of Spain’s internet users were regularly visiting sites offering links to pirated content.

LaCoalición is calling for improvements to Spain’s intellectual property law.
