IFLA on 'media and information literacy'

The information literacy group of IFLA releases statement about the value of media and information literacy skills and makes recommendations for action.

IFLA defines media and information literacy as:

"the sum of the skills needed to know when and what information is needed; where and how to obtain that information; how to evaluate it critically and organise it once it is found; and how to use it in an ethical way."

They are skills that are applicable in professional, educational and personal spheres, supporting lifelong learning as well as helping promote social inclusion.

IFLA's recommendations to governments and organisations include:

  • Commissioning research on the state of media and information literacy
  • Supporting professional development for those working in libraries, education and other key sectors involved in skills transfer
  • Embedding media and information literacy education in all lifelong learning curricula
