Cloudbusting - demystifying the Cloud

The MmIT National conference is just around the corner. Olivia Greenstreet introduces this year's key theme.

The Multimedia Information and Technology (MmIT) conference is back again for a second year in a row and this year we are tackling the future of the Cloud. The conference will take place at the University of Sheffield on the 5th April 2013 and aims to provide insight into some of the mysteries behind the Cloud by introducing you to LIS experts in the field and those who are currently using Cloud solutions.

There is a lot of excitement around Cloud computing, but how much do you really know? 'Cloudbusting - demystifying the Cloud' will feature talks on a wide variety of subjects related to the future of Cloud computing in libraries and is a great opportunity to meet likeminded individuals, hear presentations from informative and inspirational speakers and take part in interactive workshops.

The conference has been organised to ensure that everyone gets the most out of it and there is something for everyone. Karen Blakeman (RBA Information Services) will present in the morning on 'Searching in the cloud' and will provide us with a fascinating introduction on how we can utilise the Cloud to find information. This will be followed by a sequence of workshops which delegates can choose from, engaging attendees on subjects such as 'Cloud(y) law', the development of Cloud-based solutions and how to be an ‘effective LIS professional without touching Terra Firma'. Once the morning's workshops and a spot of lunch have wetted your appetite there will be an afternoon of workshops on data-sharing in the Cloud, implementing Koha LMS and collaborating on and sharing e-books in the Cloud.

The Multimedia Information and Technology (MmIT) group is one of CILIPs special interest groups and provides valuable information and ideas to its members who, like us, are interested in multimedia information and the latest technologies being implemented in the information world.
